brix in milan
place:milano
project:claudio la viola
buyer:brix
'capability in designing nothingness': this is claudio la viola’s concept for the spazio brix in via brera 4, milan. the moment I saw the former laura ashley’s store I was caught by the charm and magic that it exuded: my only thoughts were to clear it away and to bring it to its bare structure: stripped off walls as testimony of their history, neutral cement floor, lights designed and placed just where needed with only two typologies of Viabizzuno’s luminaires, on walls 'mosaico parete' and 'catena' placed in the existing arches with the purpose of emphasizing the original bearing structure. the paneled ceiling was repaired and not restored. furniture was built in poor material, black paste mdf valcromat, in order to make it vanish in its own container. iron cuts in the perimeter walls were thought to modulate space according to the different functions: fit in shelves, tables, huge material panels or big photographs, making everything appear as hanging from nothing. a heighten care of the details so as to create a container thought for increasing the value of a rigorous and essential style. clv
